When in the Course …

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

  1. A “people” is differentiated from “another people” by geography only. Unspoken is the notion that this American people shares the same, or nearly the same, culture with that other people. And this common culture could not include a common language because, in a vote in the Continental Congress, German missed being the official national language by only one vote – or so I’ve been told. This “people” did not, of course, include the many Native nations nor the African-descendent slaves. In the case of the latter, they were not imagining an “equal station” (as they were not intending to dissolve those kinds of “bands”). While there is certainly an appeal to God; this is “Nature’s God”, which was the God of Deists rather than the “God of Revelation” of Christians.
